Termite Awareness Week 2026: What Indiana Homeowners Need to Know Right Now

Termite Awareness Week is March 1-7, 2026—and if you own a home in Indiana, this is the perfect time to take termite threats seriously.

Every spring, as temperatures start climbing, termites move back toward the surface—and straight toward your home. There is little obvious warning to the typical homeowner that termites are active. These pests just quietly chew through the wood inside your walls, floors, and foundation—often for months or even years before anyone notices. By the time you spot the damage, the repair bill can be devastating.

That’s exactly why the Professional Pest Management Alliance (PPMA) rallies the entire pest control industry every year during Termite Awareness Week. The goal is simple: to help homeowners like you understand the real risk termites pose before it’s too late. You can read more about this year’s national campaign here.

At Scott’s Termite and Pest Control, we’re proud to join that effort—and we want to make sure Indiana homeowners head into spring armed with the information they need.

The Numbers Are Staggering

Termites cause an estimated $6.8 billion in property damage across the United States every single year. That’s not a national average spread thin across a few unlucky households—that’s real money coming out of real homeowners’ pockets, most of whom had no idea they had a problem until the damage was already done.

Here’s the part that catches most people off guard: homeowners’ insurance typically doesn’t cover termite damage. Insurance companies classify termite infestations as a preventable maintenance issue, which means you’re on the hook for every dollar of repairs.

That’s a painful lesson to learn after the fact.

Indiana Termites: More Active Than You Might Think

Indiana isn’t the Deep South, but that doesn’t mean you’re off the hook. The eastern subterranean termite (Reticulitermes flavipes) is the most common species throughout the Midwest, including right here in Indiana—and it thrives in our climate.

Subterranean termites build their colonies underground and travel up through the soil to reach the wood in your home. They’re drawn to moisture, so areas around your foundation, crawl spaces, basements, and anywhere wood contacts the ground are prime targets. Spring swarm season—typically March through May in Indiana—is when winged reproductive termites (called swarmers) emerge to start new colonies. Spotting swarmers inside or around your home is often the first visible sign of an existing termite problem.

Other warning signs Indiana homeowners should watch for include:

  • Mud tubes running along your foundation, walls, or crawl space—these are the highways termites build to travel between the soil and your home’s wood
  • Hollow-sounding wood when you tap on baseboards, door frames, or floor joists
  • Bubbling or uneven paint that looks similar to water damage
  • Discarded wings near windowsills or doorways after a swarm
  • Tight-fitting doors or windows that have warped due to termite activity in the surrounding wood frame

The tricky thing is that most termite damage is hidden inside walls, under floors, and in structural components you can’t easily see. That’s why professional inspections matter so much.

Why Termite Awareness Week Exists

The PPMA created Termite Awareness Week specifically because termites are so easy to overlook. Unlike ants or cockroaches, you rarely see termites out in the open. They operate silently and relentlessly, which means awareness and prevention are your best tools.

As PPMA Executive Director Jim Fredericks put it, “Termites don’t announce themselves—they work silently and relentlessly. By the time homeowners notice the damage, the cost of repairs can be devastating. Professional termite protection is not an expense; it’s an investment.”

That’s a message we stand behind completely. The cost of a professional termite inspection and treatment plan is a fraction of what you’d spend repairing serious structural damage—and unlike the damage, it’s something you can plan for.

What You Can Do Right Now

Termite Awareness Week is the perfect time to take a few proactive steps to protect your Indiana home:

  • Schedule a professional termite inspection: If you haven’t had your home inspected in the past year—or ever—now is the time. A trained technician can spot early signs of activity or conditions that make your home vulnerable, even if you can’t see anything obvious yourself.
  • Reduce moisture around your foundation: Termites love damp environments. Make sure your gutters are draining properly, fix any leaky pipes or faucets, and ensure your crawl space has adequate ventilation.
  • Eliminate wood-to-soil contact: Firewood stacked against your house, wooden mulch up against your foundation, and fence posts or deck supports that go directly into the ground are all termite invitations. Create distance between wood materials and your home’s structure wherever possible.
  • Don’t ignore swarmers: If you see flying insects that look like winged ants emerging from your walls, floors, or around your foundation this spring, don’t assume they’re harmless. Termite swarmers are a red flag that deserves immediate professional attention.
  • Get on a regular inspection schedule: The best termite protection is consistent protection. Annual inspections mean any new activity gets caught early, before it has a chance to turn into a costly problem.
